Deutz Motor

History

Deutz Motor was co-founded in 1864 by Nikolaus Otto, inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, and Eugen Langen. Located at the heart of the German auto industry in Cologne, Deutz quickly became a leader in the motor industry.

Having founded the world’s first engine company, formerly known as N. A. Otto & Cie, Messrs. Otto and Langen brought on Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach to help develop the internal combustion engine. Together these engineering pioneers built the first four-wheel automobile, the first internal combustion motorcycle as well as fitting a grandfather clock, boat and stagecoach with the early versions of a petrol engine. Messrs. Daimler and Maybach later went on produce Zeppelin motors and founded Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), which has since evolved into Mercedes-Benz.

Among others to work at Deutz was Prosper L’Orange. Mr. L’Orange invented the precombustion engine, which enables diesel engines to run without an air compressor, making the motors small enough for road vehicles. Other famous names include Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, Robert Bosch and Ettore Bugatti.
